Quint Ambassadors Discuss Implementation of New Customs Regime with PM Thaci

September 15, 2011

The Ambassadors of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States met with Prime Minister Thaci this morning to discuss implementation of new customs procedures beginning September 16.
The Ambassadors expressed their appreciation for the way in which the Government of Kosovo has cooperated with its international partners, especially KFOR and EULEX, in preparing for this important step for Kosovo.  The Ambassadors urged the Government to continue this cooperation in order to consolidate Kosovo authority at the Gates gradually and calmly during a transition period.  They also welcomed and supported the statements made yesterday by the European Union’s Special Representative, Fernando Gentilini, and the EULEX Head of Mission, Xavier Bout de Marnhac, and seconded the expectation that the embargoes relating to trade between Serbia and Kosovo can now be lifted, clearing the way for further progress in the EU-facilitated Dialogue.
The Ambassadors reiterated their governments’ support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Kosovo, including in the North, adding that we must also work together to accelerate efforts to restore the rule of law to the rest of the North as well.  They expressed appreciation for the Prime Minister’s commitment to ensure that all citizens of Kosovo benefit equally from the rule of law and welcomed the new customs regime as a positive step in this direction.

The Ambassadors stressed that the key to success in all these efforts was consultation and agreement between the Government and its international partners.
